COMMUNION

Communion is a sacred time of gathering for all believers.

In communion, we remember the ultimate price that Jesus paid to free us from our sins. We reflect on the words of Jesus, break bread and pass a cup of wine (or grape juice) to remember the New Covenant.

In communion we remember the sufferings of Jesus and give humble thanks.

Communion is sacred. Scripture cautions us to have reverence and respect before taking communion.

READ SCRIPTURE

LUKE 22:15-20, NIV

15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you.

18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-32, NIV

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,

24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.

29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.

32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

LIVE IT

Have you ever taken communion? There is something powerful about taking communion alongside other believers.

When you break the bread in your mouth, remember the broken body of Jesus, your Lord. When you drink the juice, imagine His blood shed for you and the new life you have in Him.

PRAYER

“Father God, I recognize that taking communion is a sacred act. I confess my sins before you now…

As I put this bread in my mouth I remember your body broken for me. As I drink this juice I remember your blood which was shed for me. Oh Lord, Your sacrifice was immeasurably great. Thank You for dying for me and raising from the dead to give me new life. I have been bought by your precious blood. I belong to you all of the days of my life. In your good name I pray, Amen.”
