JESUS, OUR EXAMPLE

Jesus went through all of the experiences of life. As a man, Jesus took the time to study the scriptures. He knew the book well, He understood context, He also understood “the heart” of scripture embracing the love of the Father.

When religious teachers twisted scriptures for their own selfish ideas, Jesus would correct them. The Lord knew the Word better than they did, He wrote it.

Even Satan himself tried to tempt Jesus after He had been fasting 40 days. Jesus answered Satan’s temptations with scripture. Jesus lived the Word. He knew the Word. He preached the Word, JESUS IS THE WORD.

READ SCRIPTURE

MATTHEW 4:1-11

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.

6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ” ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'”

7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'”

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'”

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

LIVE IT

When you read about Jesus and how He studied and understood the scriptures, does it encourage you? Most people don’t grow up with a great education in what the Bible says or means, we all have to start somewhere.

We learn by being surrounded by material for a long period of time. Jesus spent His whole youth growing up in the Sabbath schools and going to the synagogue for lessons in the Torah (the Old Testament). It will take time, but if you’ll commit to being surrounded by God’s Word it will become a part of who you are.

Put together a game plan to get surrounded by God’s Word. Find a local church that teaches through the Bible. Find a Bible study or start one with some friends to study the Bible every week. Maybe even try listening to a Podcast of some sermons on your way to work or while working out.

PRAYER

“Lord Jesus, I want to be covered in your Word. I want to know it because I want to know you, my Savior. Help me to get in some circles where I’ll learn about you and your Word. I love you and want more of you. Amen”
